New Delhi: Exit polls released regarding the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections indicate that the ruling coalition led by M.K. Stalin's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) appears to be gaining an advantage. However, compared to 2021, the contest this time around appears to be somewhat tougher.

In the 234-seat Assembly, the magic number for a majority is 118, and most surveys project the DMK+ alliance securing a seat tally hovering around—or exceeding—this threshold.

Projections from Various Agencies

According to P-Marq, the DMK+ alliance could secure between 122 and 132 seats; this implies that forming the government is feasible, though the victory margin is likely to remain slim.

Conversely, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) alliance is projected to win between 87 and 100 seats. 'Peoples Pulse' projects an even stronger performance for the DMK+, estimating a potential haul of 125 to 145 seats.

The figures provided by 'Matrize' largely mirror those of P-Marq.

Vijay's Party Emerges as a Game Changer

The most talked-about entity in this election is undoubtedly Vijay's new political outfit, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). According to the exit polls, the TVK could potentially secure anywhere between 10 and 24 seats.

As a party contesting elections for the very first time, securing such a significant number of seats implies that it could successfully cut into traditional vote banks and potentially alter the electoral outcomes in several constituencies.

What Does This Mean for the DMK?

If the DMK succeeds in registering a victory in line with these projections, it would mark their return to power for a second consecutive term. Given that political power in Tamil Nadu typically tends to alternate between parties, achieving this feat would constitute a major political milestone.

The AIADMK's Position

For the AIADMK, these election results suggest a partial recovery; however, the party still appears to be a considerable distance away from staging a robust comeback. Challenges pertaining to both leadership and organizational structure continue to persist.

How Reliable Are Exit Polls? It is worth noting that exit polls are merely projections. Their results have proven to be incorrect on numerous occasions in the past. Therefore, the true picture will only become clear after the votes are counted on May 4.

Now, all eyes are fixed on May 4, when it will be determined whether the DMK retains power or if Tamil Nadu politics takes a new turn.
