Kolkata: The controversy over the Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and election symbol has intensified after the Election Commission of India’s interim order freezing the party’s existing symbol. The decision has triggered contrasting reactions from both sides, with the Mamata Banerjee-led faction strongly opposing the move while the rebel camp has welcomed it.

ECI’s order comes amid a dispute between rival factions over control of the party name and its recognised election symbol. Until a final decision is announced, both groups have been asked to contest under separate identities and provide options for alternative names and free symbols.

Mamata Camp Calls EC Move Against Legal Provisions

Reacting to the Symbol Freeze order, the Mamata Banerjee faction has expressed disagreement with the Election Commission’s decision. The camp has claimed that the interim order goes against established legal procedures and has questioned the basis of freezing the party’s identity.

The faction has indicated that it will explore further legal options against the order, maintaining its claim over the party’s original name and symbol.

Rebel Faction Supports EC’s Interim Decision

The rebel faction, meanwhile, has backed the Election Commission’s decision and described the Symbol Freeze as a necessary step amid the ongoing dispute.

According to the rebel camp, the order will help avoid confusion during the electoral process by ensuring that both sides operate with separate identities until the final verdict.

Frozen Symbol Becomes Centre of TMC Power Struggle

The freezing of the TMC symbol has become the latest flashpoint in the internal battle for control of the party. The election symbol has been a key part of TMC’s political recognition and public identity.

With the symbol temporarily frozen, both factions now face the challenge of establishing their separate identities before voters. The final decision of the Election Commission will determine the future ownership of the party name and symbol.
