Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is at the centre of a political storm after a video surfaced allegedly showing him pulling the hijab of a newly recruited woman doctor during an official event.

The incident reportedly occurred at the Patna Secretariat during a ceremony where appointment letters were being handed out to AYUSH doctors, including practitioners of Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Unani medicine.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The clip, shared widely on social media by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, shows the 75-year-old CM bending over and removing the hijab of Nusrat Parveen, one of the appointees. The act has prompted sharp criticism from opposition parties, with both the RJD and Congress questioning the Chief Minister’s conduct and mental state.

RJD accused Kumar of exhibiting “deplorable behaviour” and suggested he may have “become 100% a Sanghi.” The Congress termed the act “disgusting” and called for the Chief Minister’s immediate resignation, citing concerns about the safety and dignity of women in Bihar.

Event Details

The incident occurred during the distribution of appointment letters to over 1,000 AYUSH doctors at the ‘Samvad’ programme. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, 685 Ayurveda doctors, 393 Homeopaths, and 205 Unani practitioners were part of the appointments. While most received their letters online, 10 doctors were handed the letters directly by the CM.

Reports indicate that the confrontation occurred when Nusrat Parveen, wearing a hijab across her face, approached the CM to receive her appointment letter. Witnesses say Nitish Kumar appeared surprised and exclaimed, “what is this?” before lowering the hijab himself.

Political Repercussions

The incident has ignited a heated debate across political circles and social media platforms. Critics argue that such behaviour from a state leader is unacceptable and raises questions about respect for women and religious sensitivities.

The Chief Minister’s office has not issued a detailed statement addressing the viral video or the ensuing criticism, leaving the controversy to escalate further as opposition parties demand accountability.
