Kolkata: The Congress on Wednesday decided to contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly bypolls independently after rejecting a possible seat-sharing proposal from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, bringing fresh attention to opposition coordination in Bengal ahead of the October 6 elections.
The Trinamool Congress had reportedly reached out to the Congress for a possible electoral understanding, but the proposal did not move forward after the Congress state leadership favoured an independent contest. The decision comes amid renewed discussions over alliance strategies and political positioning in West Bengal.
The Congress will field candidates in both Assembly constituencies going to polls in West Bengal on October 6, with the nomination process concluding on September 16.
According to Congress sources, discussions were held over the possibility of a seat adjustment with the Trinamool Congress. However, the party’s state unit advised the leadership to contest both seats independently and assess its organisational strength on the ground.
The decision reflects the Congress strategy of rebuilding its political presence in Bengal, where the party has faced electoral challenges over the past decade.
Sources indicated that the Trinamool Congress had explored a possible seat-sharing arrangement by offering the Nandigram Assembly seat to the Congress while contesting the Rejinagar seat independently.
The Nandigram constituency gained national attention after Suvendu Adhikari vacated the seat following his decision to retain Bhabanipur, where he defeated Mamata Banerjee after winning from two constituencies. However, the proposed arrangement remained limited to discussions and did not result in a formal alliance between the two parties.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee confirmed that the party had discussions with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal regarding the possibility of coordination for the bypolls.
The talks came against the backdrop of continuing debates among opposition parties over electoral cooperation. While some parties have explored seat adjustments in different states, Bengal continues to remain a competitive political landscape where regional and national parties seek separate electoral space.
Mamata Banerjee reacted to the Congress decision by questioning the approach adopted by the party during alliance discussions. The Trinamool Congress chief referred to previous disagreements between opposition parties over seat-sharing arrangements and indicated that political cooperation would depend on mutual understanding between parties.
The comments highlighted the ongoing challenges within opposition coordination, particularly in states where regional parties and the Congress compete for influence.
The upcoming by-elections are being closely watched as they will provide an indication of the current political landscape in West Bengal. For the Trinamool Congress, the contests will be an opportunity to maintain its position in the state’s electoral politics.

The alliance at that time ended the Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state. Since then, the political relationship between Congress and Trinamool has undergone several changes, with both parties following different electoral strategies.
The failed seat-sharing talks have once again brought the issue of opposition unity into focus. While opposition parties have cooperated on certain national-level issues, electoral arrangements often remain complicated because of state-specific political competition.
West Bengal remains one of the key states where regional political calculations, alliance possibilities and organisational strength play a major role in election strategy.
With the nomination deadline approaching, political parties are expected to intensify candidate selection, campaign planning and booth-level preparations. The Congress and Trinamool Congress will now move ahead with separate electoral strategies for the October 6 bypolls.
