The celebration symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, filling Kashi with spiritual energy and devotion.

When is Dev Deepawali 2025?

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Kartik Purnima will begin at 10:36 PM on Tuesday, November 4, and end at 6:48 PM on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. Based on the Pradosh Kaal the most auspicious time for lighting lamps- Dev Deepawali will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5.

The Brahma Muhurta for early morning prayers will last from 4:52 AM to 5:44 AM, while evening twilight will be observed between 5:33 PM and 6:51 PM. Devotees across India, especially in Varanasi, are expected to gather on the ghats to offer prayers, light diyas, and take part in the grand Ganga Aarti.

Auspicious Time to Light Diyas

The act of lighting diyas, or earthen lamps, holds deep spiritual significance during Dev Deepawali. This year, the most auspicious period to light lamps falls between 5:15 PM and 7:50 PM a span of 2 hours and 35 minutes. During this time, thousands of lamps are placed along the Ganga’s ghats, temples, and riverbanks, transforming Varanasi into a shimmering spectacle visible even from afar.

Special Yogas on Dev Deepawali 2025

This year’s Dev Deepawali occurs under the influence of Siddhi Yoga, which remains active until 11:28 AM—a period believed to amplify spiritual merit. Following Siddhi Yoga, Vyatipat Yoga begins later in the day.

Additionally, Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, a rare and auspicious combination said to fulfil all desires, will take place on November 6 from 6:34 AM to 6:37 AM. The Ashwini Nakshatra will prevail until 9:40 AM on November 5, followed by Bharani Nakshatra, which transitions into Krittika Nakshatra early on November 6.

Bhadra Timings and Its Effect

Although Bhadra will be present on November 5 from 6:36 AM to 8:44 AM, it resides in Swarg Lok (Heaven) during this time. This means it will not cast any inauspicious influence on the celebrations—allowing devotees to perform rituals without hindrance or hesitation.

The Mythological Origin and Meaning

According to Hindu mythology, Dev Deepawali commemorates the day when Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, ending his reign of terror and freeing the three worlds. To celebrate this divine victory, the devas (gods)descended to Kashi-the holiest of cities—where they bathed in the Ganga and lit lamps in reverence to Shiva.

Since then, Dev Deepawali has been celebrated as the night of divine light, symbolising the triumph of righteousness and the eternal power of faith. The ghats of Varanasi, along with those in Prayagraj, Haridwar, and Ujjain, glow with millions of flickering diyas as chants, hymns, and aartis fill the night air.

A Festival of Faith and Radiance

Beyond its religious essence, Dev Deepawali represents the unity of faith, culture, and devotion. Pilgrims, tourists, and locals come together to witness one of India’s most breathtaking spiritual events where the Ganga mirrors the stars and Kashi itself seems to merge with the heavens.

As November 5, 2025, approaches, the city prepares once again to honour the gods, celebrate the light of the soul, and bask in the eternal glow of devotion that defines Dev Deepawali.
