New Delhi: In Hinduism, Kartik Purnima is considered one of the most sacred full moon days of the year. Falling in the holy month of Kartik, it symbolizes spiritual purification, divine blessings, and the triumph of light over darkness.

The day also marks Dev Deepawali, when the gods themselves are believed to descend from heaven to celebrate Diwali on the ghats of Kashi (Varanasi).

This sacred occasion is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Shiva, and devotees perform special prayers, charity, and holy baths to seek divine grace.

Kartik Purnima 2025 Date and Timings

According to the Hindu Panchang, Kartik Purnima in 2025 will begin on November 4 at 10:36 PM and end on November 5 at 6:48 PM. Since the Purnima Tithi prevails at sunrise on November 5, the festival will be observed on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

Auspicious Timings (Shubh Muhurat):

  • Brahma Muhurat: Up to 4:46 AM
  • Vijay Muhurat: 1:56 PM to 2:41 PM
  • Godhuli Muhurat: 5:40 PM to 6:05 PM
  • Moonrise: Around 7:20 PM

These timings are considered highly favorable for performing Kartik Purnima rituals, charity, and offering prayers to deities.

Kartik Purnima Puja Vidhi (Rituals and Worship)

On this auspicious day, devotees wake up early before sunrise and take a holy bath, preferably in sacred rivers like the Ganga. After the bath, they offer water (Arghya) to the Sun God.

If visiting a temple isn’t possible, worship can be performed at home by cleaning the house and setting up a sanctified space. A yellow cloth is spread on a platform, where idols or pictures of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are placed. Devotees offer flowers, garlands, and light oil lamps (diyas), followed by reciting the Vishnu Chalisa or other sacred hymns. Chanting mantras and donating food, clothes, and grains are believed to attract divine merit.

Spiritual Significance of Kartik Purnima

Kartik Purnima is associated with the cleansing of sins and the attainment of moksha (salvation). The festival is seen as a culmination of the holy month of Kartik, during which acts of charity and devotion hold immense value.

Bathing in the Ganga before sunrise and donating essentials to the needy are considered highly auspicious. Devotees light thousands of lamps on riverbanks, temples, and homes, symbolizing the illumination of the soul and the victory of good over evil.

Observing fasts on this day either with water (jalahar) or fruits (phalahar) is believed to enhance spiritual energy and invite divine blessings.

Kartik Purnima is thus not only a celebration of devotion but also a reminder of inner purity, selflessness, and the eternal light that guides the human spirit toward liberation.
