New Delhi: The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata. She is the fifth form of Goddess Durga. She is seen holding lotus flowers in two of her hands. In one hand, she holds Skandaji in his child form, and in the other, she holds an arrow. She sits on a lotus seat, hence she is also known as Padmasana Devi. Her vehicle is a lion. She is called Skandamata because she is the mother of Lord Kartikeya. Story of Goddess Skandamata According to mythology, a demon named Tarakasura received the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma. However, Brahma declared that his end would only come at the hands of Lord Shiva's son. Tarakasura then spread fear. On the advice of the gods, Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Skandamata and taught her son Kartikeya the art of warfare. Kartikeya then killed Tarakasura.
