CBI summons TVK chief Vijay over Karur stampede
New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and actor Vijay to appear for questioning on January 12 in connection with the Karur stampede case. The stampede, which occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK political rally, claimed 41 lives and left over 110 people injured.
The deadly crowd surge took place in Veluswamypuram, Karur district, as supporters gathered in large numbers to hear Vijay speak. The tragedy prompted widespread outrage, raising questions about crowd management, permissions, and emergency preparedness during the event.

Initially, the Tamil Nadu government had opposed a central investigation, arguing that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state would suffice. However, the Supreme Court ruled that the incident had “shaken the national conscience” and required an independent probe.
Consequently, the court transferred the case to the CBI and appointed a three-member committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to oversee the investigation and ensure impartiality.
The CBI has already recorded statements from senior TVK officials and is examining several aspects of the incident, including permissions granted for the rally, crowd control measures, police deployment, and emergency response. Vijay’s summons marks a significant development in the probe, reflecting the central agency’s focus on accountability at all levels.
