Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has requested the Election Commission to refrain from summoning voters for personal hearings in cases of "logical discrepancies" and mis-mapping in the electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Correction (SIR), especially when they can produce the necessary documents.

KPCC leaders express concerns during meeting

On Saturday, KPCC MLAs Mathew Kuzhalanadan, P.C. Vishnunath, and M. Vincent met with Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U. Kelkar. The delegation stated that the SIR process has become a "painful and distressing" experience for voters.

Concerns over ASD

The KPCC reported that the ASD list includes 24.08 lakh voters, the non-mapping list includes 19.32 lakh voters, and the mis-mapping list includes 18 lakh voters. Overall, approximately 60 lakh voters are facing uncertainty. Congress leaders allege that these lists have put old and genuine voters at risk.

Demand for Procedural Improvements for Voters

The Congress requested that new nominations under the SIR be accepted until February 14th and that the facilities for nominations and corrections be extended to panchayat and village offices. They stated that the process should be streamlined in such a way that genuine voters do not face any administrative difficulties.

Calling for Logical Discrepancies is Unfair

The KPCC also stated that calling voters for "logical discrepancies" is unfair, as these errors are caused by the EC or the Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

Rearrangement and Confusion of Polling Stations

The Congress also expressed concern over the rearrangement of polling stations. This has divided family members into different polling stations, increasing confusion and difficulties for voters who have been enrolled for years.

The KPCC states that the current SIR process may result in many eligible voters in Kerala being excluded from the electoral rolls. The party demanded that the Election Commission immediately make improvements and make the procedures voter-friendly to ensure the protection of democratic rights.
