Stalin Vijay Political War Explodes After Jaw Gesture Controversy
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and DMK president MK Stalin are locked in a fresh political controversy after a remark and gesture during an Assembly debate triggered a heated exchange. Stalin responded by recalling his Emergency-era arrest under MISA and saying the physical and emotional scars of the alleged prison torture remain even today.
The controversy has gained attention across Tamil Nadu as it involves two major political figures and has reignited debate over historical struggles, political dignity and personal attacks in public life.
The controversy began during a discussion on police department grants in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly when Vijay criticised the DMK over corruption allegations and referred to Stalin’s detention during the Emergency period.
While speaking about Stalin’s MISA imprisonment, Vijay reportedly made a gesture near his jaw, which opposition members interpreted as a reference to Stalin’s alleged injury during his imprisonment.
The gesture sparked criticism from several political leaders, with questions being raised over whether political criticism crossed the line into a personal attack.
Reacting to the controversy, MK Stalin released a nearly 10-minute video message on social media and addressed Vijay’s remarks. He said the reference to his jaw was linked to an incident that actually happened during his imprisonment under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
Stalin recalled that he was arrested after the DMK government led by his father and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was dismissed by the Union government on January 31, 1976.
According to Stalin, police reached the Karunanidhi residence in Chennai’s Gopalapuram to arrest him under MISA. He said he was not present at that time and was arrested after returning the following day.
In his video message, Stalin described the conditions in which he and other political prisoners were allegedly kept during the Emergency. He claimed that several prisoners were confined in a small room that was previously used for leprosy patients. He alleged that inmates faced unhygienic conditions, overcrowding and physical assault during their detention.
Stalin said prisoners were allegedly beaten with police batons and kicked during the night. He also recalled the death of DMK leader and former MP Chitti Babu, claiming that he died following alleged prison assaults.
He said the injuries suffered during that period left permanent marks and that the history of political repression faced by the DMK could not be erased.
Stalin criticised Vijay’s approach inside the Assembly and said the office of the Chief Minister carries responsibility and dignity. He recalled a meeting with Vijay after he became Chief Minister and claimed that he had advised him to maintain respect and maturity while speaking about political opponents.
Stalin said political disagreements are normal in democracy but personal remarks and gestures targeting an individual’s dignity should be avoided.
The political battle also expanded to corruption allegations and references to the Sarkaria Commission. Vijay had cited allegations related to the former DMK government during his Assembly speech. Stalin questioned why no legal action followed if those allegations were proven after several governments changed at both the Centre and state level.
Stalin also criticised Vijay for referring to Enforcement Directorate (ED) allegations and claimed that central investigative agencies have often been accused of political misuse. The exchange has turned into a broader political debate over corruption allegations, investigative agencies and the legacy of past governments in Tamil Nadu.
Following the backlash, Vijay clarified that his body language during the Assembly speech was not deliberate. He said the gesture happened unintentionally and should not be interpreted as an attempt to insult Stalin personally. However, the controversy continued to attract reactions from political leaders and social media users.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan also criticised the gesture and said political criticism should not become a personal attack affecting an individual’s self-respect.
He said leaders holding constitutional positions must maintain responsibility in their public behaviour. The controversy has added another chapter to the growing political rivalry between the DMK and Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The clash between Stalin and Vijay comes at a time when Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing major realignment with TVK emerging as a new political force. While the DMK is defending its government record and political history, Vijay is attempting to position TVK as an alternative political platform.
As the political competition intensifies, debates over leadership style, public conduct and historical legacy are expected to remain central themes in Tamil Nadu politics.
