Chennai: Tamil Nadu will purchase only air-conditioned government buses from now on following a directive from Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban announced. The move is aimed at improving commuter comfort while modernising the state's public transport system.

CM Wants Comfortable Travel for Every Passenger

Speaking at a TVK event in Salem, the minister said the Chief Minister has instructed the Transport Department to ensure that all future government bus procurements are equipped with air-conditioning.

He said the decision reflects the government's commitment to providing a more comfortable travel experience for passengers across Tamil Nadu.

300 New Buses Already Added to Fleet

The announcement comes days after CM Vijay flagged off 300 new government buses on June 25 as part of the state's transport modernisation programme. The fleet, procured at an estimated cost of Rs 127.21 crore, includes 164 diesel buses and 136 BS-VI compliant CNG buses.

These buses have been deployed from major transport hubs such as Kilambakkam and Koyambedu to improve connectivity, reduce waiting time and strengthen both urban and intercity services.

Focus on Modern and Eco-Friendly Transport

According to official data, Tamil Nadu operates nearly 21,527 government buses through 26 transport regions and 317 depots, serving around 2.05 crore passengers every day. Nearly 64 per cent of commuters, including women, students and persons with disabilities, travel using free concession schemes.

During a transport department review meeting earlier this month, CM Vijay directed officials to develop an eco-friendly and technology-driven public transport network. The plan includes introducing smart card-based ticketing, GPS-enabled vehicle tracking, passenger information systems and round-the-clock help desks at major bus terminals.

The latest AC-only procurement policy is expected to become a key part of the government's long-term strategy to upgrade public transport infrastructure across Tamil Nadu.
