Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has made a notable shift in his political vocabulary by moving away from the term “Union Government” and using “Government of India” instead while referring to the Centre.

Since the DMK came to power under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in 2021, the Tamil Nadu government has consistently used the term “Union Government” or “Ondriya Arasu” to describe the Central Government. The expression later became a key part of the DMK’s political messaging and was also adopted by its allies.

TVK founder Vijay had also used similar terminology during his political campaign and in the early phase of his political journey. However, his latest choice of words has triggered discussion in Tamil Nadu’s political circles.

Shift From DMK-Style Political Language

The change is being seen as significant because the term “Union Government” had become closely associated with the DMK’s federalism narrative. The party has often used the expression to underline the constitutional relationship between the Centre and states.

By switching to “Government of India,” Vijay appears to be distancing himself from the vocabulary strongly identified with the DMK-led political discourse.

Political Message Or Administrative Tone?

Political observers believe the move could be aimed at presenting a more neutral administrative tone after assuming office. It may also signal Vijay’s attempt to craft an independent political identity, separate from both the DMK and its ideological vocabulary.

The shift may appear small in wording, but in Tamil Nadu politics, such terminology carries strong symbolic weight. Vijay’s choice of language is now being closely watched for what it may indicate about his government’s future approach towards Centre-state relations.
