K Kavitha launches new party ‘TRS’
Hyderabad: On Saturday, K Kavitha o announced the launch of a new political party, reviving the name Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) at a public gathering on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The move marks a dramatic escalation in her ongoing differences with her family and the leadership of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, unveiled the party name at a well-attended event, signaling her intent to carve an independent political path after months of tension with the BRS.
A former MP and legislator, Kavitha had been under scrutiny in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy case and spent several months in Tihar Jail. She has consistently denied wrongdoing, maintaining that she was falsely implicated. Sources suggest her fallout with the family deepened over what she viewed as a lack of support during that period.
Since her release, Kavitha has taken an increasingly critical stance against BRS leaders, including her brother KT Rama Rao and senior party figures such as T Harish Rao. Her remarks often focused on internal party functioning and allegations of corruption in major projects.
In September 2025, the BRS suspended her for anti-party activities. Since then, she has remained politically active through her cultural organisation, Telangana Jagruti, while continuing to hint at launching her own political outfit.
By choosing the name TRS-once the original identity of KCR’s party before it was rebranded as BRS-Kavitha appears to be invoking the legacy of the Telangana statehood movement. Addressing supporters, she spoke about the struggles behind the creation of Telangana and credited grassroots activists for preserving the region’s cultural identity.
Her announcement is likely to intensify political competition in the state and poses an internal challenge to the BRS leadership, while also drawing attention from rivals such as the Indian National Congress, which has been critical of the regional party.
With this move, Telangana’s political landscape may be headed for a fresh phase of realignment ahead of future elections.
