Abu Dhabi: At the Asia Cup 2025, Sri Lanka's young spinner Dunith Wellalage was expected to begin a new chapter full of promise, but nothing came of it. At just 22 years old, he stepped onto the field with dreams in his heart and the weight of his country on his shoulders. He made his debut in a highly stressful match against Afghanistan. But what unfolded was a test not only of skill, but also of character, emotion, and unimaginable personal loss.
As the match was reaching its climax, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka handed the last over of Afghanistan's innings to young left-arm spinner Dunith. He was facing experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, but the opposite happened. First, Nabi hit long shots off his bowling, then he received the news of his father's passing.

Nabi hit three sixes off his first three balls. The fourth ball was a no-ball, resulting in a run, increasing the pressure. He then hit two more sixes. A total of 32 runs were conceded in a single over an experience no bowler, especially a debutant, would want to endure. Bearing the burden of that expensive over, Dunith left the field in despair.
However, Sri Lanka eventually defeated Afghanistan, securing its place in the Super 4. But the celebration for Dunith Wellalage was short-lived. When the team gathered after the match, the young spinner learned of his father's passing. He died of a heart attack.
A night meant to celebrate victory suddenly turned into mourning for Sri Lanka. The team's joy was overshadowed by the loss of a teammate. Dunith immediately returned to Sri Lanka.
