New Delhi: Ecuador produced one of the biggest moments of their World Cup campaign by defeating four-time champions Germany 2-1 in a thrilling Group E finale. The victory helped La Tri finish with four points and secure qualification for the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams.
The result marked a dramatic turnaround for a team that had struggled earlier in the tournament. After entering the competition with confidence following an impressive qualifying run, Ecuador suffered an opening defeat against Ivory Coast and were later held to a frustrating goalless draw by tournament debutants Curacao.
Germany took an early lead, but Ecuador fought back and changed the course of the match. Gonzalo Plata became the hero after stretching to reach the ball and scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute.
The Ecuadorian supporters inside the New York-New Jersey stadium erupted in celebration as players dropped to the ground after securing a memorable victory.
Coach Sebastian Beccacece described the achievement as something many had considered impossible. He celebrated with fans after the final whistle, joining the emotional scenes inside the stadium.
Beccacece said the team maintained its playing philosophy despite criticism after earlier results. He credited the players for staying calm and believing in their approach.
The Argentine coach highlighted that Ecuador’s achievement belonged to the nation rather than any individual. He urged supporters to celebrate the historic moment.
The win also carried symbolic importance, coming two decades after Ecuador’s previous World Cup meeting with Germany ended in defeat. This time, La Tri reversed the outcome and created a landmark chapter in Ecuadorian football history.
