New Delhi: India's long-distance running received a historic boost as Gulveer Singh secured the country's first-ever medal in the men's 10,000m event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 27-year-old distance specialist produced a composed and determined performance to win silver, marking a landmark achievement for Indian athletics.
Competing on a rain-soaked track at Scotstoun Stadium, Gulveer stayed with the leading pack for most of the race before unleashing a powerful sprint in the closing stages. He crossed the finish line in 27:49.78, finishing behind Australia's Ky Robinson, while David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man claimed bronze.

The race proved memorable not only for India's breakthrough but also because traditional distance-running giants Kenya and Uganda missed out on podium places.
The silver medal adds another chapter to Gulveer's impressive career. Hailing from Sirsa in Uttar Pradesh and serving as a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army's Grenadiers Regiment since 2018, he has steadily emerged as India's leading long-distance runner.
His achievements include medals at the Asian Games and Asian Athletics Championships, where he dominated both the 5,000m and 10,000m events. Gulveer also holds multiple national records in the 5,000m, 10,000m, one mile and half marathon, becoming the first Indian to run both a sub-four-minute mile and a sub-60-minute half marathon.
Gulveer's silver was India's second medal on Day 6 after Harjinder Kaur claimed silver in women's weightlifting. The country's overall medal tally rose to 12, while Indian boxing also guaranteed multiple podium finishes with several athletes reaching the semifinals.
