Jhandu Kumar wons first medal for India at CWG 2026

Glasgow: Jhandu Kumar, Heavyweight Para Powerlifter, has opened India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning a Bronze medal. Kumar got emotional on the stage during the medal ceremony in Glasgow.

Jhandu’s achievement is nothing short of a powerful reflection of immense strength and unwavering determination, as his journey to the Commonwealth podium was shaped by polio, poverty, and years of struggle.

Kumar was struck by polio in his childhood and for years had to do odd jobs such as selling vegetables on pavements and driving an e-rickshaw to support his family financially.

After winning the Bronze for India, Kumar said after the podium finish that, "I cannot express my happiness. First of all, I will call my parents at home. And Gautam bhaiya, who was my first companion, whom I have practised with since my childhood.”

Kumar told a media outlet that his inspiration for bodybuilding is actor Salman Khan, and that he wanted to build an upper body like him; what started as a personal fitness goal turned into a bronze medal for India in para powerlifting.
