India secures hosting rights for 2030 Commonwealth Games; Ahmedabad gets official approval

Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare said, “India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, and relevance to the Commonwealth Games. New Delhi: India has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The games will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. India was officially awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games during the Commonwealth Games General Assembly meeting in Glasgow on Wednesday. This is the first time India will host the Games since 2010, when the 2010 Games were held in New Delhi.

Abuja was also in the running, in addition to Ahmedabad

Last month, the Commonwealth Games Executive Board recommended hosting the Games in Ahmedabad. Now, the General Assembly meeting in Glasgow has given final approval. Along with Ahmedabad, Abuja, Nigeria, was also in the running, but India emerged victorious. The Commonwealth Games will complete 100 years in 2030, so hosting these Games in India on this historic occasion is a significant achievement.

PT Usha expressed gratitude for the trust

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed happiness at being awarded the hosting rights and said that India is grateful to everyone for the faith shown in it. She said, "We are deeply honored by the trust shown by the Commonwealth Games. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century." These Games will bring together athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress.

The first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad are expected to be one of the most significant in the history of the event. This decision undoubtedly strengthens India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. Ahmedabad is also in the running to host the Olympic Games. The city has seen significant progress in sports infrastructure over the past decade.

15 to 17 sports to be included

India spent approximately Rs 70,000 crore for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, significantly exceeding the initial estimate of ₹1,600 crore. Commonwealth Sport has also confirmed that the 2030 Games will include 15 to 17 sports. Athletics and para-athletics, swimming and para-swimming, table tennis and para-table tennis, bowls and para-bowls, weightlifting and para-powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball, and boxing are among the sports that will definitely be part of the Commonwealth Games 2030.

Mandaviya described it as a proud moment

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya expressed his happiness over India being awarded the hosting rights. He said, "It is a proud moment that India will host the Centenary Commonwealth Games. India is capable of hosting major events and will be among the top five sporting nations by 2047."
