New Delhi: Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has temporarily left the national team camp after becoming a father for the first time. The Belgian Football Association confirmed that Doku and his wife, Shireen, have welcomed a baby boy named Praise.
The Manchester City forward was allowed to leave Belgium’s training base shortly before the team’s group-stage match against Iran so he could be with his wife in London for the birth.
The Belgian Football Association said Doku received the message before the match that the birth was close. After discussions with the Red Devils’ medical staff, the team decided to give him permission to travel.
The decision came at a time when Doku’s availability was already uncertain. The winger had been dealing with a respiratory infection and had missed training sessions in Los Angeles.
Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene said Doku had already been taking adjusted medication for several days and was fit enough to fly without medical risk.
Hacene also confirmed that everything went well and that the mother, father and newborn son are doing excellent. Doku is expected to rejoin the Belgium squad in Seattle on Tuesday evening.
Doku’s decision to attend the birth had earlier triggered debate in the media. A presenter was criticised after suggesting that fathers were not useful during childbirth and that World Cup duty should come first.
The remarks led to strong reactions on social media. The broadcaster later apologised publicly and suspended the presenter. Doku, however, stayed focused on his family commitment and is now preparing to return to national duty.
Belgium’s World Cup campaign has not started as expected. The Red Devils have drawn their first two group matches against Egypt and Iran. Their goalless draw with Iran raised concerns in the Belgian media about the team’s lack of creativity without Doku.
His return will be important for coach Rudi Garcia’s side. Belgium must beat New Zealand on Friday to secure progression to the last 32 and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
