Telegram Ban Lifted After NEET-UG Row, Restoration Still Uneven Across India. (Image Internet)
New Delhi: Telegram has started returning for Indian users after nearly a week of restrictions linked to the NEET-UG re-exam controversy. The messaging platform is once again visible on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, while many users have reported that chats, groups and channels are gradually becoming accessible.
App Back On Stores
Telegram was reportedly unavailable in India between June 16 and June 22 after the government directed a temporary block to curb the circulation of alleged NEET-UG exam leak material. Following the order, telecom operators restricted access, and the app was removed from major app stores for Indian users.
With the service now being restored, many users are able to download the app again and use messaging features normally. However, the restoration does not appear to be uniform across all networks and regions.
Jio, Airtel Users Report Glitches
Several users, particularly on Jio and Airtel networks, have complained that Telegram is still not working smoothly. Some have reported login failures, delayed connections, and difficulty opening existing chats. Others said the app works only when accessed through a VPN.
On social media, users have been sharing mixed experiences. While some say Telegram has fully returned, others continue to face intermittent disruptions. The issue appears to be linked to phased restoration by telecom operators.
Why Telegram Was Blocked
The restrictions were imposed after authorities raised concerns that Telegram was being used to spread alleged NEET-UG leak content. Officials reportedly cited anonymous usernames, hidden identities and the quick reappearance of banned channels as major challenges in controlling the spread of such material.
Telegram, however, maintained that it had cooperated with authorities and removed hundreds of links related to leaked material before the restrictions came into effect. Founder Pavel Durov criticised the move, saying ordinary users were affected while those misusing platforms could shift elsewhere.
Services Returning Gradually
Users who are still facing trouble can update the app, restart it, clear cache, check network settings or wait for their telecom provider to complete restoration. For many users, Telegram is already functioning normally, but for others, access may take more time. The blanket restriction appears to be ending, though full recovery remains uneven across India for some users.
