Kumkum defeated South Korea’s Oh Ye-jin in a tense final that went down to a shoot-off after the five-set contest ended 5-5. With the gold riding on a single arrow, the Indian teenager held her nerve and struck a perfect 10. Oh could manage only an 8, handing Kumkum the gold.

Thrilling final goes down to the wire

The South Korean archer started strongly and led 3-1 after the opening two sets. Kumkum responded with three consecutive 10s in the third set to level the contest at 3-3.

Oh regained the lead in the fourth set, but Kumkum refused to give up. She produced another set of three 10s in the fifth set to force the shoot-off at 5-5. Her final arrow then proved decisive.

Historic campaign for 17-year-old

Kumkum’s individual triumph comes after a remarkable run through the tournament. Earlier, she defeated reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinal before overcoming China’s Zhu Jingyi 6-2 in the semifinal.

She had already won women’s recurve team gold alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma and added a mixed-team silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara.

Olympic quota secured

The gold medal also carries significance for India’s Olympic campaign. Kumkum secured one of the available women’s recurve quota places for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by reaching the semifinals. Under the qualification rules, the quota belongs to India rather than the individual athlete.
