New Delhi: Indian boxing icon Mary Kom has publicly responded to the backlash over remarks she made about her ex-husband, K Onler Kom, during a recent episode of Aap Ki Adalat. Her statement, in which she said her ex “did not earn a single rupee,” went viral and sparked criticism online, particularly from sports enthusiasts who felt the comment undermined the struggles of professional athletes.
Mary Kom explained that her remarks were personal in nature, stemming from “long-suppressed feelings” about financial and marital challenges, and not intended as a general statement about men or athletes.

“Mein sincerely un sabhi logon se maafi chahti hoon… mere statement kabhi bhi saare mardon ke liye nahin tha,” she said, adding that the comments were tied solely to her personal conflict and “emotionally overwhelming” circumstances.
She emphasised that her marriage was not a failure initially but that trust broke down over time, ultimately leading to separation. Mary Kom noted that even after her divorce in April 2025, she refrained from public statements to maintain dignity and restraint.
Sources indicate that financial difficulties played a role in the couple’s separation. K Onler Kom faced setbacks after losing in the Manipur elections, reportedly incurring losses of around INR 2-3 crore. Mary Kom stated that these strains contributed to escalating disagreements, eventually prompting her to move out with their children.

The boxing legend clarified that her remarks were not directed at any sport or athlete. She cited examples such as Sunil Chhetri and Bhaichung Bhutia to underline her respect for footballers and their perseverance.
“Mein bilkul bhi kisi youth football, culture yaa football fraternity ka against nahi hoon… Yeh comment kisi sport ya players ke liye nahi tha,” Mary said.
Her explanation stressed that the controversial statement should not be interpreted as promoting any negative ideology or narrative.
