Agarkar Panel to Announce India T20 Squad Today
Mumbai: The Indian team for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will be announced today, Saturday, December 20th. A crucial selection committee meeting will be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, chaired by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. The team will be announced at a press conference at 1:30 PM after the meeting.
All five selectors will be present at the meeting, and current captain Suryakumar Yadav is also expected to attend the press conference. However, discussions about the captaincy have intensified even before the team selection. This is due to Suryakumar Yadav's consistently poor form, which has raised concerns among the selectors.
India Announces Power-Packed Squad for Sri Lanka T20 Series: New Faces Join Post-World Cup Triumph
Suryakumar Yadav's performance in the recently concluded T20 series between India and South Africa was disappointing. In the final T20 in Ahmedabad, which India won by 30 runs, Captain Surya was dismissed after scoring only 5 runs off 7 balls. He scored only 34 runs in 4 innings throughout the series.
It's not just this series; the entire year has been extremely poor for Suryakumar Yadav. In 2025, he scored only 218 runs in 21 T20 International innings, with an average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123. Most surprisingly, he failed to score a single half-century. Therefore, it is natural for questions to be raised about his captaincy in a major tournament like the World Cup.
There are discussions that if Suryakumar Yadav remains captain and his form doesn't improve, it will be difficult to drop him from the playing XI. This could pose a significant risk for the team. However, considering the stance of coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee, a change in captaincy just before the World Cup is considered unlikely. Hardik Pandya has made a brilliant comeback in the recent series, but the possibility of him being handed the captaincy is currently considered weak.

Vice-captain Shubman Gill's performance is also under scrutiny. He too hasn't scored a single half-century in T20 Internationals this year. Despite this, his chances of being dropped are low, meaning Yashasvi Jaiswal might have to wait his turn once again. Meanwhile, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Mohammed Siraj could be kept in the reserves.
Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Shubman Gill (Vice-Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh.
