New Delhi: For decades, football supporters in Kerala have dreamed of seeing a player from the state feature at the FIFA World Cup. That long-standing hope is now closer than ever, with 19-year-old Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid expected to be part of Qatar’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
If he steps onto the field, Tahsin would become the first footballer with roots in Kerala to appear at the world’s biggest football tournament.
Although born and raised in Qatar, Tahsin maintains a deep connection to Kerala. His father, Jamshid, is originally from Thalassery in Kannur district, while his mother, Shyma, hails from Valapattanam.
His football journey began in Qatar’s elite development structure, the Aspire Academy, known for producing top-level athletes through structured training and international exposure. From there, he progressed to Al-Duhail and gradually moved into Qatar’s national team setup.
Tahsin made headlines at just 17 when he became the first player of Indian origin to feature in the Qatar Stars League. His performances at club level helped accelerate his rise through Qatar’s youth national teams and into senior squad consideration.
Over the past year, he has also featured in international friendlies, strengthening his position as a serious contender for Qatar’s World Cup plans.
Kerala has long been considered one of India’s most passionate football regions, producing numerous domestic stars but never a World Cup player. Tahsin’s potential participation marks a symbolic breakthrough for fans who have waited generations for representation on football’s biggest stage.
While India has never competed in a FIFA World Cup, Tahsin’s journey offers a rare connection between Kerala’s football culture and the global tournament. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, attention will turn to whether the young winger can make history on the grandest stage.
