Speculation Over Exit Intensifies

According to sources, differences between Annamalai and sections of the BJP leadership have been growing over the past several months.

The speculation intensified further after reports emerged suggesting that the former Tamil Nadu BJP chief could chart an independent political course in the state, though no official announcement has been made so far.

On Monday, when questioned about the rumours surrounding his next move, Annamalai told reporters, “Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days.”

Posters Surface Ahead of Birthday

Political buzz around Annamalai has also increased ahead of his birthday on June 4. Posters carrying messages such as “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us” have reportedly appeared in several parts of the city, adding to discussions about his future plans.

The developments come against the backdrop of major political changes in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections.

Changing Political Landscape in Tamil Nadu

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, secured a major victory in its debut Assembly election, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK alliances.

Following the victory, Vijay took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after receiving support from 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly.

Annamalai’s Rise in BJP

A former IPS officer, Annamalai joined the BJP in 2020 and became the Tamil Nadu BJP president in 2021. During his tenure, he emerged as one of the party’s prominent faces in the state through aggressive outreach campaigns, public meetings and social media engagement.

He also gained popularity among younger voters and played a key role in expanding the BJP’s visibility in Tamil Nadu politics. However, uncertainty regarding his next political move has continued to grow after the 2026 Assembly elections.
