India crush Sri Lanka by 59 runs, Deepti Sharma shines with her all-rounder performance

India kicked off its ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign with a 59-run win over Sri Lanka in a rain-affected match in Guwahati. Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance.

Guwahati: India and Sri Lanka faced off in the first match of the 2025 Women's World Cup. India defeated Sri Lanka by 59 runs to open the tournament with a victory. Team India made a strong start in the tournament.

Rain Disrupted The Match

However, rain disrupted the match many times, due to which extra time had to be reduced again and again. This match which was originally of 50 overs was reduced to 48 overs after the first rain. After the second rain, the total number of overs was reduced to 47-47 overs. Sri Lanka has been given a revised target of 271 runs.

India Defeated Sri Lanka By 59 Runs

The Indian cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 59 runs in the first match of the World Cup. India won the match under the Duckworth-Lewis method. Sri Lanka was given a revised target of 271 runs. The Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 211 runs.

Sri Lanka Lost 4 Wickets For 123 Runs

India took 4 wickets for Sri Lanka's score of 123 runs. Harshitha was out for 29 runs, while Atapattu scored 43 runs. Vishni Gunaratne contributed 11 runs.

Deepti Sharma's Half-Century

Deepti Sharma completed her half-century off 50 balls. Deepti was the second Indian player to score a half-century after Amjot Kaur. This was Deepti's 16th ODI half-century and her third in the World Cup. The Indian team consolidated its position. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was dismissed for 21, while Jemimah failed to score.

Amanjot Half-Century

Amjot Kaur was dismissed for 57. She hit five fours and a six off 56 balls. Amjot shared a half-century partnership with Deepti Sharma. India lost their seventh wicket at the score of 227. Amanjot Kaur reached her maiden ODI half-century with a 2-run delivery off Sugandhika Kumari.

Smriti Mandhana Flop Show

Smriti Mandhana was dismissed after hitting two fours against Sri Lanka in the first match of the World Cup 2025. This is the first time this year that Mandhana has failed to reach double figures. In the fourth over, Mandhana played a shot off bowler Udeshika Prabodhini, which was caught by Vishmi Gunaratna. Mandhana was out for 8 runs after hitting two fours off 10 balls.
