Wellington, New Zealand/ 3 March 2016. Martin Crowe, the batting legend of New Zealand died today at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer.
After being diagnosed with follicular lymphoma in 2012, Crowe was thought to be in remission after the first chemotherapy treatment, but he announced in September 2014 that the cancer, which he called “my friend and tough taskmaster,” had retuned.
Crowe played 77 tests and 143 one-day internationals for New Zealand in his 13-year career. He scored 5,444 test runs at an average of 45.36 with 17 centuries. He played his last match against India in 1995. He also played many club matches at the age of 49, He played for the Cornwall reserve grade team, captaining them and batting at No.3 against Papatoetoe in a second-division club match in Auckland, the same club where his father played grade cricket.
Crowe’s father was also a first class cricketer; Dave Crowe played hand full matches for New Zealand and had very big dreams for both his sons Jeff and Martin who both went on to play in the national cricket team.
Martin Crowe is survived by his wife and two stepchildren.
