Election to Tripura East Parliamentary Constituency deferred
The Election Commission on Tuesday deferred the polling of East Tripura Parliamentary constituency from April 18 to 23, due to critical law and order situation.
New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday deferred the polling of East Tripura Parliamentary constituency from April 18 to 23, due to critical law and order situation.
'Reports have been received from the chief electoral officer Tripura and the Special Police Observer of Tripura that the law and order situation prevailing in the said 2 Tripura East (ST) Parliamentary constituency is not conducive to the holding of free and fair poll in the constituency on April 18 as scheduled. The Special Police Observer of Tripura has in his reports that the poll schedule to be taken on April 18, 2019 in Tripura east parliamentary constituency may be deferred,' the EC said in its order.

'The election commission of India, considering the above reports and also taking in account inputs received from various sources has decided that the poll scheduled on April 18 in Tripura east parliamentary constituency may be deferred with additional measures taken, the commission expects the law and order situation in the constituency to improve and become conducive for holding free and fair elections,' the EC said.
"What was happened to West Tripura seat on April 11 election could make the Commission happy and that is the reason for deferment of the election," Chief Election Officer (CEO) Sriram Taranikanti said on Tuesday night.

The law and order situation was not satisfactory in the first phase of election in Tripura.The situation was controlled by Rajiv Singh, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (L&O) Tripura.
It has decided now that AK Shukla, IPS, Director General of Police, Tripura will monitor the law and order situation in case of 2-Tripura East (ST) Parliamentary Constituency election. Congress President of Tripura, Pradyot Deb Barman has said that there is a possibility that the re-poll may take place in case of maximum polling stations under Tripura West Constituency, because democracy 'demolished' during the election.(UNI)
