Gaganyaan mission to begin in 2027; ISRO Chief V Narayanan details roadmap and key tests

New Delhi: ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan has said that India’s ambitious human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, is targeted to begin in 2027, with the first unmanned mission planned as a crucial step toward the final goal.

The programme aims to send a three-member crew into space for a three-day mission and ensure their safe return to Earth.

Speaking to reporters, Narayanan said three unmanned missions will be conducted before the crewed flight to thoroughly validate all systems.

“We are working towards the first unmanned mission. The Gaganyaan programme is planned to commence in 2027,” he said.

Multiple Safety Tests in Progress
Highlighting the importance of crew safety, the ISRO chief said several critical tests are currently underway. “The safety of astronauts is our highest priority. Every system, including the launch vehicle, is being tested rigorously. Our objective is to ensure the complete success of the Gaganyaan mission,” he added.

Commenting on the PSLV-C62/EOS N1 mission, which faced a technical issue in the third stage of the rocket on January 12, Narayanan said scientists are carrying out a detailed analysis to identify and rectify the problem.

He stressed that ISRO is closely studying all aspects of the mission to strengthen future launches and ensure mission reliability.
