New Delhi: Instagram has officially removed end-to-end encryption from its Direct Messages (DMs), effective May 8th, raising alarms about user privacy and data security. Previously, users could manually enable end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the sender and recipient could read their messages. Even Instagram itself could not access these conversations.

With the removal of this feature, Instagram now has the ability to read users’ private chats. The company claims that interest in encryption on the platform has waned, but experts warn that this move may allow Meta to leverage users’ private data for AI training and other purposes.

Privacy vs Monitoring: A Growing Debate

The decision has sparked intense debate over privacy. While tech companies argue that encryption makes it harder to monitor illicit activities, critics point out a growing inconsistency in Meta’s approach. WhatsApp, another Meta-owned platform, continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default, highlighting a stark contrast with Instagram’s new policy.

Experts warn that removing encryption could make users’ sensitive information—photos, videos, and personal messages—more vulnerable. Without the “gold standard” of encryption, hacking and unauthorized access to conversations could become easier.

Implications for AI and User Data

Reports suggest that one of the motives behind this change may be to facilitate the use of Instagram chats in training AI models. With end-to-end encryption gone, the company could access and analyze message content, raising further concerns about data privacy.

While Meta asserts that this change will help track criminal activity more effectively, users remain wary. In a world where social media is often used for private communication, the absence of encryption could significantly compromise security.

A Diverging Privacy Policy?

Instagram’s move highlights a potential divergence in Meta’s privacy policies across its platforms. Users who value confidentiality may need to reconsider how they use Instagram for personal conversations, given the platform’s new approach.

As the debate over encryption intensifies, the message is clear: chatting on Instagram is no longer risk-free.
