New Delhi: Buying a smartphone has become significantly more expensive this year compared to the past. According to reports, the prices of nearly 80% of the smartphone models sold in India have already risen. A price hike of up to 15% has been observed in these devices, and costs could climb even higher in the coming months.

Prices Rising Globally

This issue is not limited to India alone; smartphones are becoming more expensive across the entire world. Recently, the average price of a smartphone crossed the $400 mark (approximately ₹37,000). Previously, this price point was considered "premium," but it has now become the new norm. Consumers, too, are becoming increasingly willing to purchase higher-priced phones.

AI: The Primary Culprit

The biggest factor behind the rising cost of smartphones is the rapidly growing adoption of AI (artificial intelligence). Companies that manufacture memory chips are now prioritizing the production of chips for AI data centers. Consequently, the supply of chips—which are essential for manufacturing smartphones—has dwindled.

Low Supply, High Prices

When the supply of a commodity decreases while demand remains high, its price inevitably rises. This is precisely what is happening with memory chips. The rising cost of chips has driven up the manufacturing costs of smartphones, placing a direct financial burden on consumers.

Other Devices Getting Costlier Too

The impact of this trend is not limited to smartphones; it is also affecting other devices such as laptops and smart TVs. Companies like Lenovo, Dell, and HP have already raised the prices of their products.

When Can We Expect Relief?

Experts believe that the shortage of memory chips is unlikely to end anytime soon. This implies that the prices of smartphones and other electronic gadgets are likely to remain elevated for the foreseeable future. Customers are unlikely to find immediate relief anytime soon.

The surging demand for AI and the shortage of chips have impacted the technology market. Customers now face higher costs when purchasing smartphones, and these expenses could rise even further in the near future.
