New Delhi: WhatsApp is preparing to make a major change to its Status feature. According to a new report, an Instagram-like "Close Friends" status option may be added to the app, allowing users to share their updates only with selected people. This will eliminate the need to change their Status privacy settings each time, making sharing easier and safer. Currently, this feature is in testing and beta users may be the first to receive it.

Status Shared with Limited Number of People

The report states that with this new feature, users will be able to restrict access to their private photos, videos, or messages to only specific contacts. Currently, changing Status privacy requires repeatedly going into Settings, but with the introduction of the Close Friends option, this process will be significantly simplified. This is considered an important step towards providing users with a more personal and controlled sharing experience.

Feature Spotted in Beta

According to a feature tracker report, the Close Friends status option has been spotted during testing in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.5.13. It's currently in development, and the company hasn't announced an official release date. WhatsApp typically tests new features with beta users first and releases them to all users after receiving feedback.

How a Close Friends List Will Be Created

Users can create their Close Friends list in two ways. The first method is to add selected contacts from the status privacy settings. The second method is to manage the list directly from the status screen. Users can change this list at any time, but changes will only apply to future statuses. This eliminates the need to adjust privacy for each status individually.

Different Color Ring Will Indicate

People on the Close Friends list may see a different colored ring around the profile photo when viewing the status. This will indicate that the status has been shared to a limited audience, similar to Instagram.

Subscription plans also in works

The report also states that WhatsApp may introduce subscription plans in the future, which could include features like premium stickers, custom themes, and additional chat pins. This is expected to further enhance the user experience.
