Mulayam Singh Yadav's younger son Prateek Yadav passes away
New Delhi: Prateek Yadav, son of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, died at the age of 38 years in Lucknow. He was brought dead at the Lucknow civil hospital on Wednesday.
He was the husband of BJP leader Aparna Yadav and half-brother of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
He was brought to the hospital by family members at 5:55 a.m., where he was declared dead. His wife Aparna Yadav was not present at the time.
A team of doctors at King George Medical University is set to conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no visible injuries on his body.
Prateek had long battled lung-related health issues and was undergoing treatment for a blood clot in his lungs. His condition reportedly worsened on Tuesday morning, and when he became unresponsive, his family rushed him to the Civil Hospital, but he could not be revived.
Prateek Yadav was an MBA graduate from the University of Leeds, UK, and established himself as a successful real estate developer. A fitness enthusiast, he gained international recognition in 2012 when he was featured on a leading bodybuilding website as “International Transformation of the Month,” attributing his remarkable transformation to encouragement from his father over a decade earlier.
He was also deeply committed to animal welfare, actively supporting initiatives aimed at the care and protection of animals.
In 2017, Prateek drew public attention when he purchased a Lamborghini worth Rs 5 crore, sparking criticism given his family’s socialist background. Responding to the controversy, he clarified, “I bought the car on loan, have all the paperwork, and pay my taxes. Why the uproar?”
Prateek was the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sadhna. His half-brother, Akhilesh Yadav, is the son of Mulayam Singh and his first wife, Malati Devi, who passed away in 2003 following complications during childbirth.
Sadhna, Prateek’s mother, had previously been married to Chandra Prakash Gupta, with whom she had Prateek. She separated from her first husband a year after his birth and divorced in 1990. Sadhna passed away in July 2002.
Prateek married Aparna Yadav in 2011 after an eight-year courtship. The couple first met through a mutual friend and began communicating via email. Aparna later revealed that she had been fond of Prateek since Class 10 and had been unaware of his political lineage for several years. They had two children together.
The couple’s marriage faced difficulties. In January, they announced plans to file for divorce, with Prateek alleging that Aparna had harmed family relationships and neglected his mental health. However, the divorce proceedings were not pursued further.
Unlike many members of his family, Prateek did not engage in politics and never contested any elections. In 2012, there was a push from some Samajwadi Party supporters for him to contest from Azamgarh in the 2014 general election, with backing from his mother and uncle Shivpal Yadav, but it did not materialize.
Prateek Yadav is remembered as a devoted family man, a fitness enthusiast, and a philanthropist with a strong interest in animal welfare, who largely stayed away from the political limelight despite his prominent family background.
