Severe heatwave grips Uttar Pradesh as Banda hits 47.4°C; Rain likely to bring relief

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is in the grip of a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring across large parts of the state. Banda recorded a scorching 47.4°C, making it the hottest city in the country over the past 24 hours and breaking its own four-year April record.

The temperature in Banda crossed the 47°C mark for the first time this season, surpassing levels recorded in recent years. The extreme conditions have intensified concerns over public health and heat-related illnesses. Reports suggest that the city’s temperature was even higher than several international locations experiencing summer heat.

Heatwave across 55 districts

According to the India Meteorological Department, heatwave conditions are prevailing in at least 55 districts of the state. Day temperatures are expected to remain between 42°C and 45°C in several regions, including Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur and Lucknow.

Health authorities have advised residents to avoid stepping outdoors between noon and 3 PM, particularly children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to heatstroke and dehydration.

Rain brings local relief

While most parts of the state continue to face intense heat, weather conditions shifted in Lalitpur, where strong winds and rainfall were reported in the afternoon, offering temporary respite.

The changing weather pattern is also expected to extend to other districts in the coming days.

IMD forecasts relief from April 28

The IMD has indicated that a new western disturbance is likely to become active from April 27, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall across western Uttar Pradesh and the Terai belt.

From April 28 to May 1, rainfall activity is expected to spread across the state, which could bring down temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

  • April 28: Light rain across the state, winds up to 40 kmph
  • April 29: Better rainfall activity in east and west UP
  • April 30: Rain and lightning likely
  • May 1: Moderate to heavy rain in eastern districts
