Census and UP assembly polls 2027
Lucknow: The buzz has intensified across political and administrative circles in Lucknow over the possibility that the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections may be held ahead of schedule.
However, neither the Election Commission of India (ECI) nor the Central Government has issued any official statement on this matter so far.
Clash Between 2027 Census And Elections
The primary reason cited behind these speculations is the second phase of the proposed nationwide Census of 2027, which is scheduled to take place in February. This period necessitates a massive deployment of the administrative machinery—including officers and staff—resources that are also indispensable for the election process. Consequently, managing both of these monumental tasks simultaneously is perceived as a significant challenge.
Extra Pressure On Resources
According to experts, if the timelines for the elections and the Census were to overlap, it would place immense pressure on the district administration. This is precisely why discussions are underway regarding the possibility of conducting the elections sometime between December 2026 and January 2027.
Constitutional Provisions
According to constitutional experts, Section 15(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, empowers the Election Commission to conduct elections up to six months prior to the expiration of an Assembly's tenure. Since the term of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is set to conclude on May 22, 2027, an election announcement could theoretically be made at any time after November 2026.
Elections In Other States
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, elections are also scheduled to take place in Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur in early 2027. If the election schedule is indeed revised, polling in these states could potentially be conducted simultaneously. Currently, the Commission has stated that preparations are proceeding according to the standard procedure; however, political parties have intensified their strategies.
