Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh’s Governor Anandiben Patel has directed state universities and colleges in Uttar Pradesh to implement a mandatory dress code for students, extending the uniform culture already followed in schools to higher educational institutions.
The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by the Governor in her role as Chancellor of State Universities. Officials said the move is aimed at promoting equality and reducing visible social discrimination among students on campuses.

Until now, students in most colleges and universities across the state were free to choose their attire, unlike school students who are required to wear uniforms. However, the latest direction indicates that institutions may soon introduce standard dress codes for higher education students as well.
According to officials present at the meeting, the Governor emphasised that a common dress code could help create a more disciplined academic environment while minimising social and economic differences visible among students.
The proposal is expected to be discussed further at the university and administrative levels before implementation details are finalised.
Along with the dress code proposal, the Governor also stressed the need for employment-oriented education, particularly for women students.
She instructed universities and colleges to introduce practical and vocational courses aimed at making women financially self-reliant. Suggested programmes included beautician training, mehndi art, GST-related courses, accounting skills, bindi-making and millet-based food production.
Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen self-employment opportunities and encourage skill development among female students across the state.

The Governor also reviewed the condition of hostels in women’s colleges and directed institutions to improve facilities and ensure a safer environment for students.
Special emphasis was placed on creating support systems where female students can openly discuss their concerns without hesitation. Institutions were advised to form committees dedicated to addressing issues related to safety, wellbeing and counselling.
The meeting reflected the state administration’s broader focus on discipline, skill development and women’s empowerment in higher education. While the dress code proposal has already sparked discussion among students and educators, officials say the government’s priority is to create a more inclusive and structured educational atmosphere across state-run institutions.
