Video: Revenge Killing or Old Dispute? Gorakhpur Contractor Murder Explained
Gorakhpur contractor Shivkumar Tripathi was shot dead over a suspected year-old feud. Police are probing the revenge angle and searching for the accused.
Gorakhpur: A tragic incident stemming from a deadly feud came to light on Saturday evening in Ahirauli village, under the jurisdiction of the Sikriganj police station in Gorakhpur. Shivkumar Tripathi (55), a contractor for the electricity department, was shot dead. Preliminary investigations suggest a link between this murder and a killing that occurred about a year ago, in which a member of the opposing party had lost his life. It is suspected that this incident was carried out in retaliation for that earlier feud.
Shot dead while on the way to a feast; tension prevails
Shivkumar had left his home on Saturday evening to attend a Brahmbhoj (ritual feast) organized in the village. Assailants, who were lying in wait, surrounded him on the way and opened rapid fire. Shivkumar succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The deceased’s son, Aditya Tripathi, is a lawyer at the Gorakhpur Civil Court. Following the incident, villagers were enraged and prevented the body from being taken for a post-mortem, leading to heightened tension in the village.
Police searching for the accused
Upon receiving the information, Sikriganj Station House Officer (SHO) Anjul Chaturvedi arrived at the scene with a police force. The police pacified the agitated family members and villagers and collected evidence from the site with the help of a forensic team. Keeping the old feud and this new angle of the murder in mind, the police are conducting raids to locate the accused.
