New Delhi: The automobile industry is witnessing a major shift in car cabin design these days. Many automakers are replacing traditional physical buttons with large touchscreen panels to provide almost all controls. AC, climate control, music, and even some essential functions are now screen-based. While some customers find this design modern and premium, safety experts consider it inconvenient and potentially dangerous.

New regulations in China

Reports indicate that the Chinese government has become increasingly concerned about this trend. The country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is preparing to mandate separate physical switches for important safety features. Under the proposed regulations, essential functions such as turn signals, hazard lights, gear selection, and emergency calls may require separate buttons at least 10x10 mm in size.

These regulations aim to ensure that drivers can quickly access essential controls without distraction.

Growing Trend of Minimalist Design

In recent years, minimalist design has become increasingly popular in electric vehicle cabins. Screen-based controls have been prominently featured in many models from companies like Tesla, BYD, and Xiaomi Corp. Some vehicles even incorporate essential features like hazard lights into touchscreens, which experts consider excessive software dependence.

Dangers May Increase While Driving

Safety experts say that using touchscreens can distract drivers from the road. Even a slight delay at high speeds can increase braking time, increasing stopping distances and increasing the risk of accidents. If the screen responds slowly or develops a technical glitch, the situation can become even more serious.

Companies May Have to Change Design

Given the potential risks, many auto companies may have to alter the interior design of their vehicles if stricter regulations are implemented. The primary purpose is to keep drivers focused on the road and ensure passenger safety.

If these rules are implemented, the future could see the return of physical buttons in cars-a significant step toward striking a balance between modern technology and safety.
