Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has cautioned investors about certain international Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that are currently trading at prices higher than their actual Net Asset Value (NAV). The exchange warned that such a gap could expose investors to sudden price corrections.

BSE advised investors to carefully evaluate the difference between an ETF’s market price and its underlying value before making investment decisions.

Why are international ETFs trading above NAV?

An ETF’s NAV represents the real value of the assets held by the fund, while its exchange price changes according to buying and selling activity among investors.

In recent months, some international ETFs have been trading at a premium, meaning investors are paying more than the actual value of the assets owned by the fund. Limited availability of fresh ETF units, along with strong demand for overseas market exposure, has contributed to this price difference.

Premium prices can increase risk

BSE highlighted that a high premium over NAV does not always reflect the actual performance of the underlying assets.

If the difference between the ETF’s market price and NAV reduces, investors who purchased units at inflated prices may face losses. The correction can happen even if the foreign stocks held by the ETF do not see a major decline.

Investors advised to check NAV before buying

The exchange has advised investors to review important details such as NAV and indicative NAV (iNAV) before investing in international ETFs.

Experts have also suggested that investors should avoid making decisions based only on market momentum and should compare the traded price with the actual value of the fund’s holdings.

Global investment interest drives ETF demand

International ETFs have become popular among Indian investors looking to diversify their portfolios by gaining exposure to global markets.

However, restrictions related to overseas investments have affected the supply of some international fund products, creating a situation where demand has increased faster than availability.

Market caution remains important

BSE’s advisory comes as investors continue to explore global investment opportunities. The exchange has stressed the importance of understanding pricing differences and evaluating risks before entering international ETF trades.
