New Delhi: Tata Group's N Chandrasekaran has resigned as Chairman of Tata Sons. The development comes ahead of the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled on August 18, 2026.
Chandrasekaran’s tenure as Tata Sons Chairman was expected to continue until February 2027. His reported exit marks the end of a significant chapter for the conglomerate, during which he played a key role in expanding Tata Group’s presence across technology, automobiles, aviation, manufacturing and emerging industries.
Known as “Chandra” in corporate circles, he became one of India’s most prominent business leaders, rising from a technology professional at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to leading one of the country’s oldest and largest business groups.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1987 as a young engineer after completing his education in computer applications.
Starting his career in the technology sector, he worked on software projects and global technology solutions. His ability to understand both technology and business helped him rise steadily within the organisation.
Over the years, Chandrasekaran became a key figure in TCS’s growth story. He handled important international assignments and helped the company strengthen its position in the global IT services market.
In 2009, Chandrasekaran was appointed CEO and Managing Director of TCS.
During his leadership, TCS expanded its global operations and strengthened relationships with major international clients. The company focused on digital transformation, cloud computing, automation and new-age technologies.
His leadership helped TCS become one of the world’s most valuable IT services companies.
Chandrasekaran was known for his calm management style, focus on innovation and ability to combine technology with long-term business strategies.
In 2017, Chandrasekaran was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.
His appointment was historic as he became the first person from outside the Tata family and the first non-Parsi chairman to lead Tata Sons. He took charge at a difficult time when the group was facing internal challenges after the removal of former chairman Cyrus Mistry.
Chandrasekaran focused on bringing greater coordination between Tata companies and creating a unified growth strategy for the group.
Under Chandrasekaran’s leadership, Tata Group expanded its focus on future industries and strengthened several key businesses.
He played an important role in Tata Motors’ electric vehicle strategy. The company emerged as one of India’s leading electric car manufacturers under the group’s push towards cleaner mobility.
After Tata Group acquired Air India from the government, Chandrasekaran oversaw efforts to rebuild the airline’s image, expand operations and improve customer experience.
The group increased investments in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, renewable energy and advanced technology.
Tata Group also strengthened its digital businesses, including online platforms, financial services and technology solutions.
N Chandrasekaran was born in 1963 in Tamil Nadu.
He completed his early education in the state before pursuing higher studies in technology. He studied Applied Sciences at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology and later completed a Master’s degree in Computer Applications from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli.
His strong technical background became the foundation of his long corporate journey.
Despite being one of India’s most influential corporate leaders, Chandrasekaran has maintained a private personal life.
He is married to Lalitha Chandrasekaran. The couple has stayed away from media attention, while Chandrasekaran remained focused on his professional responsibilities.
Unlike many business personalities, Chandrasekaran does not personally own the Tata Group companies. Tata Sons is controlled mainly by charitable organisations including Tata Trusts.
His earnings come from executive compensation, salary, bonuses, investments and other professional sources. His exact net worth is not publicly available, though he has been among the highest-paid corporate executives in India.
N Chandrasekaran’s journey from a young TCS engineer to the chairman of Tata Sons remains one of India’s most remarkable corporate success stories.
During his leadership, Tata Group entered new sectors, expanded globally and focused on technologies that are expected to shape the future. From strengthening TCS to guiding Tata Motors’ EV ambitions and leading the Air India revival, Chandrasekaran’s tenure marked a period of major transformation for the Tata Group.
His resignation now opens the door for a new leadership chapter at one of India’s most respected business conglomerates.
