“Why Did You Lie?” BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi Over SIR, ECI Controversy

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday launched a strong attack on Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over the Election Commission row, shortly after a meeting between Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the two Election Commissioners.

The party said all decisions taken by the Election Commission regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had been made with the unanimous consent of all three commissioners.

BJP Questions Opposition Allegations

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused opposition parties, particularly the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, of making baseless allegations against the Election Commission based on a media report.

"Based on a media report in one newspaper, the way the opposition parties, especially Congress and particularly Rahul Gandhi, are making baseless and shameful allegations against the Election Commission is extremely unfortunate. We condemn this..." he said.

Prasad pointed to the Election Commission’s detailed statement issued after Saturday’s meeting, saying it clarified the position on the SIR exercise.

"Today, the Election Commission has issued a detailed press note. In the meeting that took place today, all three commissioners of the Election Commission were present together, which is part of this news report. It states that all the decisions regarding SIR were taken with the consensus of the Chief Election Commissioner and both Election Commissioners of the Election Commission," he said.

BJP Cites SIR Timeline, Supreme Court Order

Prasad also referred to the timeline of the SIR exercise, saying it was first launched in Bihar before being extended to West Bengal and 30 other states.

"The second point mentioned is that it was launched in all states on 24.06.2025. It started first in Bihar, followed by actions in West Bengal and 30 other states," he said.

He also cited the Election Commission’s reference to the Supreme Court’s order on the SIR process.

"The Election Commission has specifically noted that on 27 May 2026, the Supreme Court deemed the entire SIR process to be appropriate..." Prasad said.

Prasad Challenges Congress On SIR

The BJP leader then questioned the parties that had approached the Supreme Court against the SIR exercise, naming the Congress, CPI(M) and TMC.

"Who went to the Supreme Court to challenge the entire SIR process? The Congress party did, CPI(M) did, and TMC filed dozens of cases..." he said.

Referring to West Bengal and Kerala, Prasad also made political claims about the impact and reception of SIR in the two states.

"Mamata Banerjee's government was completely wiped out there (in West Bengal). The Congress in Kerala considered this SIR to be right, saying it was because of it that they won..." he said.

Prasad concluded his attack by directly questioning Rahul Gandhi.

"The first question to Rahul Gandhi is: why did you lie?..." he said.
