New Delhi: There is some relief for consumers on April 6, as petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged despite rising tensions in West Asia and a sharp surge in crude oil prices. State-owned oil companies have held steady on regular fuel rates. However, premium fuels and prices at private fuel stations have seen a noticeable increase, putting pressure on certain segments of consumers.

Crude Oil Rise, Yet Stable Prices

Brent crude prices have reached around $109 per barrel in the international market. The Iran-US tensions pose a threat to global supply, particularly raising concerns about the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this, state-owned companies like Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL have not made any changes to the prices of standard petrol and diesel, providing relief to the common man.

Premium Fuel Becomes Expensive

While standard fuel prices remain stable, premium fuel users have been hit hard. Indian Oil has increased the price of its 100-octane petrol 'XP100' by ₹11 to ₹160 per liter. Additionally, the price of 'Xtra Green' diesel has also risen to ₹92.99 per liter. This will increase the cost for luxury car and superbike owners.

Significant Increase at Private Pumps

Unlike government companies, private fuel retailers have increased prices sharply. Following Nayara, Shell has also increased its prices. In Bengaluru, Shell petrol has become costlier by ₹7.41 and diesel by ₹25.01 per liter. Diesel prices here have crossed ₹123.52, causing concern for public.

Different Rates in Different Cities

Petrol and diesel prices remain variable across major cities across the country. In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹94.77 and diesel at ₹87.67 per liter, while in Mumbai, petrol is priced at ₹103.54 and diesel at ₹90.03. Price differences are also evident in cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Patna. This is primarily due to varying state VAT and transportation costs.

Will prices rise further?

Experts believe that currently, government companies are maintaining stable prices despite losses to control inflation. However, if crude oil prices remain above $110 per barrel for a prolonged period, petrol and diesel prices are almost certain to rise in the coming days. Consequently, ordinary people may soon be hit by inflation.
