Nagpur: A 17-year-old girl in Class 12 was allegedly kept locked up, hurt, and sexually assaulted for more than a day inside a rented flat in Dighori, South Nagpur. Police rescued her late Monday night.

The accused is Nirbhay Pakhare, 20, a business management student. His parents are well-known doctors from Thane, about 700 km away. Police say Pakhare made a fake Instagram account using the name “Akash Mehra” last May and got close to the girl online. Once he had her trust, he allegedly got explicit photos of her and then used them to threaten and blackmail her into meeting him. He had assaulted her once before at a hotel, and later rented the Dighori flat so he could keep abusing her whenever he visited from Thane.

On Sunday morning, he took her to the flat again. This time, he did not let her leave. Her father, a senior government officer, filed a police complaint at Hudkeshwar police station when she didn't come home on Monday.

Police rescue her in a late-night raid

Around 11 pm Monday, the pair was found by police at the flat. The hands and legs of the girl were tied to the bed. She had been naked, and Pakhare was handling a leather belt with a knife just a few yards away. The body of the girl had several injury marks on it, and she was crying and begging for help. She had broken down crying at the sight of the police, said an officer.

The accused was immediately overpowered, and the girl was immediately taken to a government hospital for treatment.

Police followed the girl to her house

Police followed the Instagram messages and the other online activities of the girl to the address of the accused in Thane. They asked the mother of the accused to give her a call. The police were able to locate the accused as soon as he answered.

While in the proposed marriage, Pakhare had forced the girl to call her parents and assure them that she was fine. That phone call gave another lead to the police. A food delivery rider was also seen going to the same address, and the police followed him to the flat. Then they moved in. For about 24 hours that she was a captive, the girl had been repeatedly kidnapped and filmed, police said.

Forensic investigation ongoing

Senior Inspector Anamika Mirzapure said the accused was submitted to court and brought into police custody for two days. She said police are also analysing whether he has been involved in similar crimes in the past while closely scrutinising his Instagram account and the phones and other devices that he had.

She said a detailed forensic investigation, with the help of the regional forensic science laboratory, is also being carried out. Devices in the flat will be tested, and DNA samples, fingerprints and other evidence will be meticulously gathered, all of which will be vital to the case.
