New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued show-cause notices to senior police officials, including the Gurugram Police Commissioner, over alleged insensitivity in handling a sexual assault case involving a 4-year-old child.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant pulled up the police for downgrading the offence from Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) to Section 9 (aggravated sexual assault) under the POCSO Act.
The court questioned the conduct of the officers involved in the investigation and asked them to explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for their handling of the case.
In a stern observation, the apex court also issued notices to members of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), seeking an explanation as to why they should not be removed from their positions for their alleged insensitive approach towards the minor victim.
The case has raised serious concerns over the conduct of authorities responsible for child protection and the implementation of stringent provisions under the POCSO Act.
The court’s intervention underscores the importance of sensitivity and strict adherence to legal provisions in cases involving crimes against children. Further proceedings in the matter are expected soon.
