Two Punjab Police personnel were found shot dead at a border outpost in Gurdaspur, barely 2 km from the Indo-Pak border. While a Pakistan-based outfit claimed responsibility online, police say all angles including internal dispute are under probe.
The bodies were discovered inside the room, which serves as an outpost.
Gurdaspur: Two personnel of the Punjab Police were found dead with gunshot injuries at a border checkpoint in Gurdaspur district late Saturday night, triggering high alert across the sensitive Indo-Pak frontier belt.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar were posted at an outpost in Adian village under Dorangala police station. Their bodies were discovered inside the checkpoint room on Sunday morning by a local resident.
The spot lies nearly 2 km from the international border, an area long considered vulnerable to cross-border smuggling and infiltration attempts.
UN Report links Red Fort blast to Jaish-e-Mohammed; Raises cross-border terror concerns
Soon after the incident, a little-known Pakistan-based group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH), circulated posters on social media claiming responsibility for the killings.
However, a senior police official dismissed the claim, stating that the outfit has no known operational presence in Punjab or elsewhere in India. Investigators believe the claim could be a diversionary tactic aimed at misleading the probe.
Authorities have refrained from confirming any terror link at this stage.
Senior officers, including Deputy Inspector General (Border) Sandeep Goel and district police officials, rushed to the site. Forensic and technical teams examined the crime scene, which was later sealed.
Police said it remains unclear whether the two personnel shot each other following a dispute or if a third individual was involved. Officials emphasised that the investigation is at a preliminary stage and no conclusions have been drawn.
Sources indicated that possible involvement of gangsters or terror operatives is also being examined, given the strategic location of the outpost.
The Dorangala sector has previously witnessed attempts by Pakistan-based groups to push in drones carrying drugs, arms and ammunition. The region has historical significance due to past terror activities, including the 2016 attack on the Pathankot Air Force Station carried out by operatives of Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Outposts in the area operate in coordination with the Border Security Force, which maintains a strong presence along the frontier. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring termed the incident serious and urged a comprehensive probe, cautioning against speculation.
With heightened vigilance in border villages, investigators are working to determine whether the tragedy was the result of an internal altercation or part of a larger conspiracy.
