Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force has taken significant action against the illegal trade of codeine-based cough syrups by arresting two individuals, Abhishek Sharma and Shubham Sharma. Their arrest on December 11 marks a major step in the state’s ongoing efforts to curb recreational misuse of these controlled medicines. The STF has intensified operations to dismantle organised networks involved in distributing the syrups across multiple districts.

Key Suspects Identified in a Widespread Network

Authorities have identified more than ten key individuals believed to be orchestrating the illegal sale and distribution of codeine syrups. The network reportedly spans multiple states and includes roles such as manufacturers, distributors, transporters, and local operators. The Special Investigation Team, formed by the state government to probe this issue, revealed that the syndicate operates in a coordinated manner, making enforcement efforts critical to prevent further misuse.

Extensive FIRs and Active Raids

In a massive crackdown, over 128 FIRs have been registered against various individuals and establishments involved in this illicit trade. Raids are ongoing across multiple locations, with authorities scrutinising financial transactions and inter-state links that facilitate the trafficking. The scale of these operations represents the largest-ever enforcement effort in Uttar Pradesh against the illegal distribution of codeine-based medicines.

Enforcement measures have been significantly strengthened, reflecting the government’s commitment to public safety and law enforcement.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Actions

The SIT continues to conduct exhaustive searches and investigations aimed at uncovering all layers of the trafficking network. Authorities expect further arrests and disclosures as they follow leads across districts and states. The focus remains on dismantling the organised network to prevent further misuse of codeine syrups, which pose serious health risks to the public, particularly when abused recreationally.
