BJP Gets 7 Times More Election Funds Than Congress, EC Data Reveals

The Bharatiya Janata Party received nearly Rs 1,473 crore during the recent Assembly election period, more than seven times the Congress’ reported receipts of Rs 207 crore. The figures, revealed in expenditure statements submitted to the Election Commission, highlight a massive financial gap between India’s two largest national parties.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s financial strength during the recent Assembly elections stood in sharp contrast to that of the Congress, with the ruling party reporting receipts nearly seven times higher than its main political rival. According to expenditure statements submitted to the Election Commission, the BJP’s central headquarters alone received nearly Rs 1,473 crore during the election period, while the Congress reported consolidated net receipts of around Rs 207 crore.

The figures have sparked fresh debate over the growing financial divide between India’s major political parties and the role of campaign resources in modern elections.

Election Funding Figures Reveal Massive Gap

According to the documents made public by the Election Commission, the BJP recorded receipts of Rs 1,472.8 crore at its central headquarters during the election period covering the five state assembly polls.

The Congress, meanwhile, reported total net receipts of Rs 207.17 crore across its central headquarters and state units for elections held in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry. The difference highlights the BJP’s significantly larger financial pool during a crucial election cycle.

BJP’s Cash Balance Increased During Election Campaign

The BJP not only received higher funds but also ended the election period with a stronger financial position. The safforn party’s closing balance at its central headquarters increased from Rs 6,722.6 crore on March 15 to Rs 7,627.2 crore on May 6.

This marked an increase of nearly Rs 904.6 crore during the election period. The figures indicate the party’s ability to attract substantial financial resources even while conducting large-scale election campaigns across multiple states.

Congress Funds Declined During Poll Period

In contrast, the Congress witnessed a decline in its available funds during the election campaign. The grand old party started the election period with around Rs 169.06 crore, including Rs 22.9 crore in cash and approximately Rs 146 crore in bank balances. By May 6, its combined funds across the central headquarters and five state units had fallen to nearly Rs 103.2 crore, reflecting a decline of about Rs 65.86 crore.

Where Did BJP Spend Its Election Funds?

The BJP’s available expenditure statements show that the party spent approximately Rs 159.7 crore in Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A major portion of the spending went towards general party campaigning, including advertisements, publicity material and star campaigner-related expenses.

Assam emerged as the state with the highest expenditure, with the BJP spending around Rs 96.27 crore. Of this amount, nearly Rs 76.73 crore was allocated for general party propaganda, while Rs 19.54 crore was spent on candidates and election-related activities.

Advertising and travel expenses of star campaigners formed a significant part of the campaign budget, accounting for around Rs 37 crore and Rs 27.3 crore respectively. The BJP spent approximately Rs 51.56 crore in Tamil Nadu.

Congress Campaign Spending Pattern

The Congress central headquarters spent around Rs 40.52 crore on general party propaganda across the five states. Its state and local units contributed additional spending of nearly Rs 102 crore under the same category. The expenditure pattern reflects the different campaign strategies and financial structures adopted by both national parties.

Bigger Political Impact

Election campaigns in India have become increasingly resource-intensive, with parties spending heavily on advertising, digital outreach, rallies and voter engagement programmes.

The latest financial disclosures underline how campaign funding has emerged as a major factor influencing political competition. The widening financial gap between the BJP and Congress could intensify discussions around political funding transparency, electoral reforms and equal opportunities during elections.

The Election Commission is expected to continue publishing expenditure-related documents from political parties as part of the electoral transparency process.

With future elections approaching, the financial strength of political parties is likely to remain a key talking point among voters, analysts and political observers.
