Mumbai: Mithun Chakraborty reportedly refused to play the villain initially, before agreeing to the Rajinikanth-starrer with a specific request: his character must not be beaten or shot by the superstar.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is set to share screen space with Rajinikanth in Jailer 2, but his entry into the highly anticipated sequel came with an unusual condition. At a recent promotional event, Rajinikanth recalled how Mithun initially turned down the offer to play the antagonist before agreeing to the role on one stipulation: the superstar’s character, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, should neither beat him up nor shoot him.

Speaking at the Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth said the production team had approached Mithun for the film, prompting the veteran actor to question whether he would be cast as the villain opposite him.

Recalling Mithun’s initial reaction, Rajinikanth said his friend was reluctant to take on a role that could involve being physically overpowered by him on screen.

Rajinikanth Recalls Mithun’s Condition

Rajinikanth explained that the two actors later met during an edition of the WAVES Summit, where their conversation turned to the film. Mithun then expressed his willingness to participate, provided the makers agreed to his condition.

According to Rajinikanth, Mithun told him that he was ready to do the film but did not want his character to be beaten or shot by the superstar’s character. Rajinikanth said he agreed to take the request to director Nelson Dilipkumar, although he initially thought Mithun might not have been entirely serious. The anecdote has added a playful dimension to the film’s promotions, highlighting the camaraderie between the two veteran actors.

Mithun And Rajinikanth Reunite After Decades

Jailer 2 marks Mithun’s return to Tamil cinema after a prolonged gap. The actors previously worked together in Ramesh Sippy’s Bhrashtachar (1989). Rajinikanth also made a special appearance in the Bengali film Bhagya Debata (1995), which featured Mithun in the lead role.

The sequel brings together three recipients of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award: Rajinikanth, Mithun Chakraborty and Mohanlal, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.

Star-Studded Cast

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 also features Ramya Krishnan, S. J. Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan in significant roles. Shivarajkumar and Jackie Shroff are also expected to appear in cameo roles, following their appearances in the first instalment.

The action thriller features music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 15, 2026. With its ensemble cast and the reunion of two celebrated actors, Jailer 2 is generating considerable interest ahead of its release.
