Guwahati: Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg passed away suddenly at the age of 52 on September 19 in Singapore following a seizure while swimming. His final cinematic project Roi Roi Binale, which he had been passionate about for years, is set to release nationwide on October 31. The film was a dream project for Garg, featuring his original voice recordings and a story crafted around music and love.
Filmmaker Rajesh Bhuyan confirmed that almost all production work had been completed, with only background music pending. The team decided to honor Zubeen Garg’s wish by releasing the film on the date he had chosen. His original voice has been preserved using lapel mic recordings, ensuring the musical authenticity fans expect.
The film is set to premiere in 46 cities and 90 screens across Assam, with all first-day tickets already booked. Cinema halls have responded to the high demand by scheduling early morning shows, some starting as early as six AM. Family members including Zubeen’s wife Garima and sister Palme Borthakur have been closely involved in finalizing the project, ensuring the late singer’s vision is respected.
Garima recalled Zubeen’s excitement about acting in Roi Roi Binale, playing a blind artist in a purely musical love story. She acknowledged that some parts of the film lack his dubbing, creating a void, but emphasized that the musical essence of the project remains intact.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has requested the state government to make Roi Roi Binale tax-free in recognition of Zubeen Garg’s contributions to Assamese culture. In his letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi described the film as the late singer’s final cinematic work and highlighted the profound sense of loss felt across Assam.
All first-day tickets for the 90-screen release in Assam have been pre-booked.
Authorities are investigating allegations that Zubeen Garg was poisoned in Singapore. Key suspects include his manager Siddharth Sharma, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and members of Garg’s personal security force. Several of the accused have been arrested and their judicial custody has been extended by 14 days. Court proceedings are ongoing, and strict security protocols have been enforced following local protests.
