Two of Zubeen Garg’s long-time personal security officers were arrested following revelations of large unexplained financial transactions. How were they linked to the late singer’s money, and what role did they play in his final days?
Zubeen died in Singapore last month while swimming in the sea.
Guwahati: In a significant development in the investigation of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg’s death, two of his personal security officers (PSOs) have been taken into custody by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Assam Police confirmed on Friday.
The officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were formally arrested after days of questioning regarding financial irregularities in their bank accounts. Both had previously been suspended by the Assam Police after it came to light that they had conducted unusually large transactions far beyond their known sources of income.
Authorities discovered over Rs 1.1 crore in transactions linked to the two men with Bora’s account showing Rs 70 lakh and Baishya’s around Rs 40-45 lakh. Investigators are scrutinising these amounts to understand their connection to the late singer’s finances.
“Zubeen Garg was poisoned,” reveals singer’s friend; Alleging conspiracy to kill him
The 52-year-old singer, composer, and actor passed away last month in Singapore, leaving millions of fans in Assam and across India in shock. Known for his immense contribution to Assamese music and culture, Zubeen had also been involved in various charitable activities, often using personal channels to distribute funds.
Sources reveal that Zubeen had used his PSOs’ bank accounts to store and manage some of his money, primarily intended for charitable purposes. The financial dealings under investigation reportedly span the past four to five years, raising questions about the level of involvement his security staff had in handling his funds.

Speaking to the media, Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, acknowledged that the singer had entrusted some money to his PSOs for social work. “Zubeen had given some money to the PSOs for the social work he does,” she said, adding that the officers maintained records and bank statements of the transactions.
However, Garima stressed that she was unaware of the singer’s broader financial dealings and appealed against politicisation of the case. “The issue should not be politicised. We just want to know what happened to him on that day,” she said, emphasising the family’s demand for transparency.
She also condemned the circulation of videos claiming to show Zubeen’s final moments, questioning the fragmented presentation. “Why are his last videos being posted in parts, just like a web series?” she asked.
Both Bora and Baishya had served as Zubeen’s personal security officers for several years. They were assigned to him by the Assam Police nearly a decade ago after the singer received threats from the banned militant group ULFA.
With the SIT examining both personal and financial aspects of the case, the arrests of Bora and Baishya represent a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation, which continues to remain open and active.
Two more arrested in Zubeen Garg’s death case; Four accused now in jail
Zubeen’s sister, Palme Borthakur, and wife Garima have repeatedly demanded transparency about the circumstances surrounding his death. The Assam government formed the SIT last month to ensure a thorough probe into all facets, including the singer’s finances and personal security arrangements.
The investigation is ongoing, and the SIT has confirmed that it will continue to examine all leads to uncover the truth behind the tragic death of one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons.
